The night before, I had set an early reservation for the Colosseum. I recall it wasn’t too early, probably around 8:30 AM. Stepping out into the streets, I noticed how empty they were. It felt starkly different from major cities like Paris, New York, or Tokyo. Afraid I might be late for my reservation, I rushed toward the Colosseum, walking as if I were a New Yorker.
On my way, I unexpectedly stumbled upon the Trevi Fountain. It seemed like every awake person in Rome was gathered there. My impression of the fountain? “Wow… it’s certainly dazzling!” It was an impressive sight, but I couldn’t understand why people would wait in such a long line to get closer to it. From a distance, I felt I could appreciate the full view better. Plus, I was stressed about making it on time for my Colosseum reservation. After standing there for just 1-2 minutes, I resumed my hurried pace toward the Colosseum.
Seeing the Colosseum up close made me realize that my Roman journey had truly begun. Knowing very little about its history, I once again turned to ChatGPT via voice chat to ask about the Colosseum’s background and other essential information. I won’t write down everything ChatGPT explained here, as information about the Colosseum is easily accessible. Instead, I want to share my personal impressions of the site.
Learning that a structure like the Colosseum was completed in 80 AD left me feeling perplexed about how to comprehend human history. Walking up the still-standing marble and stone steps that could hold crowds even after 2,000 years, I wondered: Where does the flourishing of civilization begin? In an era where fire was the only light at night, how did the Roman Empire achieve such feats? My faint assumptions that the development of civilization required specific scientific advancements were completely challenged as I stood before the Colosseum. I pondered what kind of function could describe the progression of human development from the past to the present.
전날 밤 다시 잠들기 전 미리 예약해 둔 콜로세움으로 이동했다. 그렇게 이른 시간은 아니었던 것으로 기억한다. 오전 8시 30분 정도? 거리로 나왔는데 진심 사람이 너무 없었다. 파리와 뉴욕, 도쿄와 같은 대도시와는 사뭇 다른 느낌이 들었다. 콜로세움 예약시간에 늦을까봐 또 뉴요커처럼 미친듯이 걸어보았는데, 걷는 중 예상치 못하게 트레비 분수가 나왔다. 그리고 당시 깨어있던 사람은 모두 거기에 있던 것 같았다. 트레비 분수를 본 소감은..? ‘그렇구나… 진짜 화려하다!’ 엄청난 절경이긴 한데 긴 줄을 기다리면서 그 안까지 들어가야 할 이유를 모르겠어서, 멀리서 보는게 더 전경을 눈에 잘 담을 수 있을 것 같았다. 게다가 콜로세움 예약시간때문에 엄청 스트레스 받은 상황이었어서 1-2분 서서 지켜보다가 다시 콜로세움으로 발길을 돌렸다.
콜로세움을 본 순간 내 로마 여행이 시작된다는 것을 실감할 수 있었다. 콜로세움에 대한 배경에 대해서 아무것도 몰랐던 나는 파리때와 마찬가지로 chatGPT 보이스톡으로 콜로세움의 역사, 기타 알아야 할 사항을 물어봤다. chatGPT가 말해준 건 여기에 추가적으로 적진 않겠다. 콜로세움에 관한 자료는 어디에서나 손쉽게 찾을 수 있으므로. 대신에, 지금부터는 유적지에 대한 내 감상을 위주로 적어보려고 한다.
콜로세움과 같은 건축물이 서기 80년에 완공되었다는 사실은 인간으로서 과거를 어떻게 받아들여야 하는지 혼란스럽게 한다. 2000년이 지난 지금까지 남아있는 대리석, 돌, 그리고 여전히 많은 관광객들을 수용할 수 있는 계단을 오르며 문명의 번성은 어디서부터 시작될까 하는 의문이 들었다. 밤을 밝힐 빛이 불밖에 없던 시대에 로마 제국은 어떻게 이러한 문명을 이룩할 수 있었는가에 대한 물음이 들었고 문명의 특정 단계까지의 발전을 위해서는 특정한 과학 기술이 필요하지 않을까 하는 나의 어렴풋한 생각은 콜로세움 앞에서 부정되었다. 과거에서 현대까지의 발전은 어떤 모양의 함수일까? 라는 생각을 하며 콜로세움을 감상했다.
Into Foro Romano & Palatine Hill
After leaving the Colosseum, I admired the Arch of Titus before entering the Roman Forum and climbing Palatine Hill. Walking paths that had existed for 2,000 years felt surreal. While not perfectly preserved, glimpsing into a life that existed before recorded time was fascinating.
Standing atop Palatine Hill, overlooking the panoramic view of Rome as the emperors once did, gave me a faint sense of why this place became an empire.
There were many statues with inscriptions on their bases, and I took photos of them, intending to ask ChatGPT about them later. I’m curious about these things—what the letters I can’t understand mean, what hidden stories these ruins hold. Since the mobile data connection in Rome wasn’t great, I could only take pictures for now to revisit later.
For instance, when I sent ChatGPT a photo of the ninth inscription, it explained that many of the inscriptions in this area referred to priestesses of the Temple of Vesta in Rome.
콜로세움에서 나와 티투스의 개선문을 감상한 뒤 포로 로마노, 팔라티노 언덕을 올랐다. 2000년 전의 길을 걷는다는 감각은 생경했다. 예전과 완전히 같게 보존이 되어 있는 건 아니지만 상상하기에도 아득한 서기 이전의 삶을 엿보는 것은 흥미로웠다. 게다가 팔라티노 언덕에 올라 예전에 로마 황제가 보았을 로마의 파노라마 뷰를 보니 왜 이곳이 제국이었는지 어렴풋이 느낄 수 있었다.
조각상 하단에 있는 비석의 사진이 많은데, 나중에 chatGPT에게 자세히 물어보려고 미리 찍어뒀던 거다. 난 이런게 궁금하다. 내가 이해하지 못하는 글자가 사실 어떤 것을 의미하는지… 이 유적지에 숨겨진 이야기는 뭔지. 로마에서 데이터가 잘 안터져서 사진을 미리 찍어둘 수밖에 없었다.
예를 들어, 아홉번째 사진을 gpt에게 던져줬을 때 gpt는 이렇게 답변한다. 실제로 해당 공간의 많은 비석들은 로마 베스타 신전의 여신들을 나타냈다.

While admiring the view from Palatine Hill and imagining what it must have been like for Roman emperors, I spotted a seagull. It didn’t flinch, even as people approached it. I have a habit of letting my imagination run wild, and this moment was no exception.
What if this seagull is the reincarnation of a Roman emperor? I thought. Perhaps after their death, when asked what they’d like to reincarnate as, one of them chose to become a bird, so they could stay in Rome, freely soaring above its skies. Fun to think about, right? Adding a bit of a story to the moment.

A lot of Inspirations for better cooking
After spending around five hours exploring the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill, I headed to a nearby restaurant, Iari the Vino, for a late lunch. My Italian professor had given me a list of recommended restaurants in Rome, but I didn’t use it much. After hours of sightseeing, I was often too hungry to care and would settle for whatever was nearby. However, I was determined not to just eat anywhere since part of my trip to Italy wasn’t just about seeing historical sites—it was also about finding inspiration for my pasta-making hobby, which I’d picked up after moving to New York.
Although I thought I could eat right away, I was mistaken. The restaurant was incredibly popular with both locals and tourists, and the line was long. I didn’t give up, though—I was in Italy and wanted to have a proper meal. After waiting for about 15 minutes, I finally got a table.
I kept my order simple: a starter of tomatoes with mozzarella cheese, carbonara as the main dish, and a glass of prosecco. Prosecco is always a safe choice since it cuts through the richness of the food. The meal was perfect. It was incomparable to the overly salty carbonara I had at Termini Station the day before. I bought a T-shirt with a cat design at the Colosseum, and when I ordered Uber Eats the next day, the delivery guy handed me the food while staring at the cat on my shirt instead of me. 나는 가면 바로 식사를 할 수 있을 줄 알았는데 아뿔사. 이곳이 관광객과 현지인 모두에게 유명한 맛집이었던 것이다. 줄이 엄청 길었다. 그래도 난 포기하지 않았다… 이탈리아에 온 겸 제대로 된 곳에서 식사를 하고 싶었다. 그래서 한 15분정도 기다린 이후 테이블에 앉을 수 있었다.
시킨 메뉴는 간단했다. 스타터로 토마토와 모짜렐라 치즈, 메인 메뉴로 까르보나라, 그리고 프로세코 와인. 사실 프로세코가 제일 만만하다. 느끼함을 잡아주기 때문에… 음식은 정말 완벽했다. 어제 테르미니역에서 먹은 까르보나라와는 비교조차 할 수 없는 최상의 맛이었다. 그리고 이렇게 먹어도 50유로 미만으로 나오기 때문에 뉴욕의 미친 물가를 다시 한 번 실감할 수 있었다.
식사를 마친 이후 더 관광을 하기가 힘들어서 숙소로 다시 돌아간 이후 스페인 계단 근처에서 쇼핑을 하려고 노력했다. 여기서도 정말 멋진 코트 하나를 건지고 싶었는데 내가 원하는 디자인은 남성복에서밖에 없더라… 왜 클래식한 3버튼 싱글코트를 찾기가 이렇게 어려운것인지. 한국 쇼핑몰에는 널렸는데 미칠 것 같았다.ㅋㅋㅋ 그리고 마트에 들러서 gpt가 추천해주는 레드와인, 화이트와인, 스파클링 와인을 구매하고 이상하게 생긴 파스타 면을 구매했다.
숙소에 도착한 이후 콜로세움에서 구매한 팔찌를 꼈다. 난 여행지에서 이런 조그만 기념품을 사는걸 좋아하는데, 그 이유는 여행 이후 실제 현실로 되돌아 갔을 때 꿈에서 느리게 깨는 느낌을 받기 때문이다. 아 또 웃긴 일화가 있는데 ㅋㅋ 콜로세움에서 고양이 티셔츠를 구매했는데 어제 우버이츠를 받다가 배달기사가 날 보는게 아니라 티셔츠의 고양이를 보고 음식을 건네 주더라. 뭔가 포스가 굉장한 티셔츠 같아서 앞으로도 뭔가를 배달받을 때 자주 이용할 것 같다.
